In-4° on period full vellum. Text in Greek, comments in Latin. About a dozen leaves uniformly browned, a few [rss]. An old small red wax seal has been partly removed, leaving a tiny hole in the page. Overall a good copy. The first date of 1597. 12 p. preliminaries, 285 p., + 9 pp. of index (ctm-h2) Jan van Heurne is a Dutch physician; in Paris he followed the lessons of Duret and the famous Ramus (Pierre de la Ramée). He then visited Italy, where he met Capivaccio, Mercuriali, Guilandini and the famous Frabrizio d'Acquenpendente. (Nouvelle biographie universelle depuis les temps les plus reculés) "It is in the Dialectica that one reads the exposition of the Ramist 'method', unique and universal, presented by its inventor not as a philosophical system, but as 'an art of teaching direct and easy', illuminated by 'the highest light of reason', according to a descending dialectic inspired by the Platonic myth of the cave, even if, little by little, Aristotle becomes more present, as support for a construction founded nevertheless on a break with post-medieval Aristotelianism."
