Original poster by Herman Verbaere (fully signed in the plate at the top right) dating from around 1950 with image of the Ooidonk Castle on the Leie near Ghent (Belgium). Very beautiful color gradations on the castle that basks in the afternoon sun. Verbaere at his best. Printing: Litho-offset R. Deboo - Bruges. Condition A-: light roll creases, otherwise integral and intact. Fresh colors. Beautiful quality. Shipping: rolled in a sturdy tube with Bpost track & trace. In a meander of the Leie, a short distance from Ghent, lies the graceful and stately Ooidonk Castle. The surrounding water and the fine park radiate calm and give the castle a harmonious and peaceful character that almost makes its turbulent history disappear from memory. This medieval fortified fortress is a unique example of Spanish-Flemish Renaissance architecture. The castle was rebuilt in 1595 and is regarded as one of the most beautiful castles in Belgium. With its characteristic stepped gables and dovelike towers, this East Flemish gem does not pale beside the imposing castles of the Loire. Herman VERBAERE was born as the son of a printer from Wetteren. He trained at the Academy in Wetteren and later in Ghent, where in 1933 he was laureate of the Grand Prize for Drawing from Live Model. At the 1937 World Expo in Paris he was awarded for his Flemish landscape posters. He is one of Belgium’s greatest designers of tourist posters.
