Imposing Burdick Group System Desk by Bruce Burdick for Herman Miller (1980s) This lot features a Burdick Group System desk, designed by Bruce Burdick for Herman Miller in the 1980s. Defined by Time magazine as one of the best industrial designs of 1981, the Burdick Group is an iconic furniture system, praised for being one of the first highly functional and flexible systems, capable of integrating computer terminals and other office electronic equipment. With its exclusive, engineered form, this desk embodies a perfect synthesis between modern design and operational flexibility. Design and history: The Burdick desk is based on a highly configurable structural frame, known for its build quality and premium materials. The technological soul: Burdick chooses a central aluminum structural beam to define the project’s main axis. This beam not only supports the structure but also serves as the spine for the flexible anchoring of surfaces and all other elements. The ingenuity of the modular workstation: the system’s distinctive feature is its total configurable flexibility. The modular composition allows the desk to be easily modified and expanded, adapting to new operational models and making it a versatile piece for an office or home study. Lot conditions: The desk on auction presents itself in excellent used condition. Components: the desk is accompanied by glass supporting surfaces, suspended storage units, and orientable accessory plans that can be positioned at will to optimize workflow, returning to the whole an extraordinary visual and functional continuity. Each component has been cleaned and polished and shows only slight signs of use consistent with the piece’s age. Structure: the high-precision cast-aluminum arms support the top. The leg supports are made of enamelled steel in black-umber with aluminum bases. The feet can naturally be moved along the central bar at will. Dimensions: Width: 285 cm Depth: 79 – 165 cm Height: 73.5 cm The Designer: Bruce Burdick A hugely talented architect and designer, Bruce Burdick has translated structural precision and advanced ergonomics into office design. His celebrated collaboration with Herman Miller produced revolutionary projects grounded in the constant pursuit of flexibility and modularity applied to professional living, making his works cult objects for international contemporary design collecting.
