Born in Cateau-Campbrésis, Matisse began painting during a period of recovery in 1890 and decided to become an artist, despite his parents’ opposition. He studied at the Académie Julian and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he took lessons from the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and an expression of emotional intensity. His work is based on simplification, stylization, and synthesis.
