Created when physical limitations increasingly prevented Matisse from painting at an easel, these compositions emerged from sheets of paper painted in intense blue gouache, which he cut directly with scissors and arranged into simplified female figures. In both works, the body is transformed into an interlocking rhythm of curves, limbs and negative white spaces, reducing the seated nude to its essential silhouette while retaining a remarkable sense of volume and movement.
