Frame: Ornate gilded wooden frame, with wear and small chips. Henri Karkowski (1913-1995), sometimes referred to by the first name Ede, is a painter of German origin born in Rostock. He settled in Moselle in the village of Pouilly where he resided and created the majority of his work until his death. Trained under great masters, he was notably a pupil of Nicolas-Pierre Untersteller before obtaining his diploma at the European Academy of Fine Arts. Known for his figurative style and poetic sensibility, he specialized in landscape representations, capturing farms and the countryside through his paintings and lithographs. His technical mastery is evident in major compositions such as his views of the Moselle and Metz Cathedral. During his career, his talent was widely recognized by his peers, allowing him to appear in the National Directory of Fine Arts. He was awarded numerous official distinctions, including a Painting Prize awarded by the National Academy of Metz for his entire body of work. In 1983, he also won a prestigious Oscar accompanied by a Grand Silver Medal at the 3rd Biennale of Arts and Crafts in Nice. Today, his creations remain sought after by collectors devoted to Lorraine art and the poetry of rural landscapes.
