HAYES — Lost in the Ice, 1870 - Lot 118

HAYES — Lost in the Ice, 1870 HAYES (Isaac J.). Lost in the Ice. Translated from the English with the author’s permission by Léon Renard and illustrated with 58 woodcuts. Paris, Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie, 1870. Early French edition of this adventure and polar exploration narrative by Isaac Israel Hayes, richly illustrated. In-8, contemporary half-chagrin brown binding, ribbed spine, gilt title, marbled paper covers. Numerous woodcuts, some full-page. The book’s appeal lies in its status as a 19th-century work on polar exploration. Fair condition: binding is scuffed; the fore-edge and endpapers show wear; corners are rounded; there is fairly significant and, in places, heavy foxing throughout the volume.
