VISSER (Hans Willem Cornelis Anne), born in St. Annaparochie in 1773, died in IJsbrechtum on 20 Sept. 1826, was trained by the preacher Tenckinck in his birthplace, after which in 1789 he enrolled as a student in theology at the university of Franeker. He enjoyed the instruction of Wassenbergh de Crane, Chaudoir, Cannegieter, Verschuur, Meyer and Van Voorst there. The writing of a dissertation was prevented by the circumstances of the time. In August 1795 he accepted the call as pastor at Warns. He remained there until 1809, when he took the position at IJsbrechtum; up to his death he held the pastorate there. He diligently fulfilled his clerical duties. In addition he devoted himself to the improvement of schooling, for which he had especially good opportunity after his appointment as school inspector in 1804; in 1815 he was furthermore named secretary of the provincial education commission. He wrote very much on educational matters; notable among them is his Verhandeling over de volstrekt noodzaketijke kundigheden, welke in de openbare en armschoen in het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden behooren medegedeeld te worden en de beste leeruijze voor dezelve benevens eene vergelijking daarvan met de Beltlancastersche schoolinrigting in Engeland (Amsterdam 1820), which was crowned by the Maatschappij tot Nut van ’t Algemeen. He also did good work for Frisian history. With H. Amersfoordt he published the Archief voor vaderlandsche en inzonderheid Vriesche geschiedenis, oudheid en taalkunde (Leeuwarden 1824-28, 3 delen), which aimed at publishing sources, but at the time found little interest. Visser was a sharply outspoken character, who with force, but often with too little prudence and tact, pushed through what he had undertaken; as a result his life was often embittered by sharp opposition and bitter disputes.
