Hans Herrmann (1858-1942) - Personen aan een drukke kade

This concerns a museum piece by the famous painter Hans Herrmann 1858-1942. A crowd with many people on a quay. The painting was professionally restored a long time ago and is in beautiful condition. Signed bottom right. The canvas, unframed, measures 95 cm x 60 cm. This beautiful painting was auctioned in 2009 at a world-renowned auction house in Amsterdam for €4,374 (see last photo). A wonderful work that you won’t tire of looking at. Hermann studied from 1874 to 1879 at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, under Eduard Daege and later Otto Knille (drawing), Christian Wilberg (painting) and Karl Goesov (landscape painting). In 1880 he continued his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, with Eugen Dücker. From Düsseldorf, where he began his own studio in 1883, Hermann also made his first study trips to the Netherlands. He painted for a while in Dordrecht and would thereafter travel to the Netherlands annually for extended periods, from 1886 onward from Berlin. He painted in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Vlissingen, Volendam, Spakenburg and Katwijk aan Zee (where he worked with German Grobe). In the 1890s he joined the Egmond School of Gari Melchers and George Hitchcock for a time. He also, though less prominently, was part of the Berlin 'Group of Eleven' (‘Gruppe der XI’), including Walter Leistikov and Max Liebermann. He painted mainly en plein air, especially village, city, beach and harbor scenes, with many figures, grey skies and attention to typical Dutch folklore elements. Characteristic of his work are balanced color and light values and a loose, impressionistic brushwork. The immediate visual impression was always central in his work, although he also paid attention to anecdotal details. Hermann also undertook study trips to France and Italy (Venice). He was an honorary citizen of Berlin. He died in 1942 in Berlin, aged 82.
