Handwritten letter with signature to grandnephew Max Michael Maurice Freud Magnus Vienna, 18 October 1925 Simple letterhead written on both sides in ink. The letter is addressed to Freud’s grand-nephew Max Michael Maurice Freud Magnus (b. 1924), who was about a year old when it was written. He was the son of the author and translator Erwin Magnus (1881–1947) and Margarete Magnus, née Freud (1887–1984). Margarete was the daughter of Freud’s sister Maria "Mitzi" Freud (1861–1942) and Moritz Freud. Erwin Magnus had previously been married to Elna Nathansen (1889–1937), with whom he had four children. He married Margarete Freud in 1923. In 1933 or 1934, Erwin Magnus moved to Denmark. Margarete and Max Michael Maurice Freud Magnus did not follow until 1937. The letter gives a personal insight into Freud as a family man during a period when he was severely affected by the cancer of the jaw, which was diagnosed in 1923. It is also important as testimony to a family that was later affected by the Holocaust: Mitzi Freud was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and murdered in Treblinka. Provenance: The recipient, Max Michael Maurice Freud Magnus; thereafter by inheritance in the family to this day.
