Hala - H.Th.J.A. Busquet - Wall lamp - Metal - Hala Zeist wall lamp

Hala Zeist design wall lamp ‘60 Herman Theodoor Jan Anthoin Busquet (born February 9, 1914) was a Dutch industrial designer. He founded the company Hala in 1932 and mainly designed modern lighting. H. Busquet died on June 12, 1977. Hala was one of the first lighting companies in the Netherlands. It started with the metalworking company of Hermanus Petrus Pieter Christiaan Busquet (born in 1884). He started his small business / workshop in 1909 in Hilversum. Five years later, in 1914, his son Herman Theodoor Jan Anthoin Busquet was born. The family moved around 1932 to Zeist. There the father and son Busquet continued the business at Koppelweg 11. In 1942 the company expanded by building a new factory/workshop. After World War II, father and son Busquet entered into a cooperation agreement with the lighting company Hala Hannoversche Lampenfabrik GmbH in Hannover, Germany. Founded in 1920. Hermanus Busquet imported lamps from the Hanover lamp manufacturer and sold them on the Dutch market, which was in full reconstruction after the devastating Second World War. The company used in the Netherlands the same name 'Hala Nederlandsche Lampenfabriek B.V.', 'Hala' derived from the amalgamation of the name Hannoversche Lampenfabrik. They also used similar catalogs. By the mid-1950s, Hala Zeist also produced its own designs. For this, they built a new warehouse on Kroostweg 59 adjacent to the existing infrastructure in Zeist. In 1960 the Hanover lighting company ended, and Hala Zeist went its own way. In the same year the father of Busquet died. Herman Busquet had already been in charge of Hala Zeist for several years and continued the business after his father’s death. Hala faced strong competition from other Dutch lighting manufacturers, including ANVIA from Almelo, Dijkstra from Heemstede, Raak and Herda from Amsterdam, and the big Philips from Eindhoven. After the death of Herman Busquet in 1977, the company was sold and moved to Amersfoort. Hala was known for producing high-quality fixtures in the modern segment. Over the years this also produced some classics such as their 'Pinocchio' and their desk lamp 'De 144'. With their own design department, and with collaborating designers, Hala strove to develop increasingly unique and appealing fixtures. After the takeover, decorative lighting and project lighting continued to be supplied, and they operated mainly in home interior. The decorative lighting was supplied to the better lighting shops in the Netherlands and Belgium. In addition to the own Hala collection and the VT wonen Licht collection, Hala worked with well-known designers. Peter Kos and Tom Kater are not unknown in the design world. In addition, Hala supplied project lighting and custom lighting. Later, somewhere after the turn of the century, the Hala brand came into the hands of a Dutch holding company 'Curanda', which in turn in 2010 was acquired by designer, Mr. Peter Kos and Mr. Bob Nijk. In 2011 Arth Holding BV also became a shareholder of Curanda. In the same year 2011, the holding also took over the then-bankrupt Dijkstra from Heemstede. The two brand names continued to exist individually with selective and reduced offerings. Hala then focused mainly on selling lamps to the consumer and business market. Dijkstra was then mainly focused on supplying lamps for construction projects. After the takeover of Dijkstra, the Curanda holding, due to internal shareholder disputes, found itself in a heavy impasse. Between Bob Nijk Beheer BV and Arth Holding BV, after the contribution of Dijkstra Lamps, a shareholder dispute arose. This conflict led to (costly) proceedings at the court and the Enterprise Chamber. Eventually Arth Holding BV was bought out as shareholder. The aforementioned shareholder dispute had the consequence that Curanda could not fully focus on its business operations. After Mr. Nijk, due to health reasons, could no longer perform his management duties, Curanda became rudderless. Mr. Kos then attempted to take over the management of Curanda and to realize turnover. Because of declining turnover, the shareholder conflict and the high costs over several years, bankruptcy was unavoidable. Curanda filed for bankruptcy after it became clear that the salaries of the employees for December 2013 could no longer be fully paid. In 2013 Curando was dissolved and the Hala brand was sold to Maretti Lighting. The Hala brand ceased production in 2013. Maretti Lighting from Almere kept some models of Hala alive. Around 2015 Maretti stopped continuing to issue them. This was the final curtain over the historic Hala brand."
