Classic Dutch landscape, with an old farmstead, a water feature, and resting cows in the Melkbocht. The Melkbocht is a sheltered spot in a meadow where cows were milked by hand by the farmer. A splendid atmospheric impression of a Dutch landscape, painted in oil on canvas by the artist H. van Gessel, possibly a pseudonym of G. J. Delfgauw. Gerardus Johannes Delfgauw (1882–1947) was self-taught, painted in an impressionist-naturalist style and mainly painted landscapes and cityscapes. His skies are laid on the canvas in light tones in a rough manner and invite the viewer to enter the landscape. Given the painting and the signature H. van Gessel lower right, it may be a pseudonym of G.J. van Delfgauw (1882–1947). The painting is framed in a classical, richly ornamented gold-colored frame.
