GUYON (Louis). *Les Diverse Leçons*: Following Those of Pier - Lot 82

GUYON (Louis). *Les Diverse Leçons*: Following Those of Pierre Messie and Sieur de Vauprivaz. Lyon, Claude Morillon, 1610. In-8, lemon-colored morocco leather, double border of two straight and curved fillets, the inner border edged at the corners and along the sides with various fleurons and small fleurs-de-lis, central cartouche engraved with fine lines and featuring a serrated quatrefoil adorned with four fleurs-de-lis, decorated spine, red title label, inner roulette, edges gilt on marbled paper (Binding circa 1700). Second edition, following the original of 1603, of *Diverse Lessons* by Louis Guyon, Sieur de La Nauche, a polymath and physician native of Dôle. The work is divided into five books covering various subjects: ancient history, witchcraft, superstitions, etymology, ceremonies, natural history, medicine, women, drunkenness, drinkable gold, etc. The chapter on jealousy (p. 833) is edifying: it recounts the story of a man from Périgord who mutilated his genitals. Rich, archaic-style binding commissioned for a highly inquisitive Parisian, adorned with Louis XIII-style decoration —Anne of Austria, without the crowned numerals: it is identical to the one reproduced by Isabelle de Conihout and Pascal Ract-Madoux in the catalog *Reliures françaises du XVIIe siècle, chefs-d’œuvre du musée Condé* (2002, no. 30). It can be compared with the blue morocco binding on a 1556 edition of Suetonius that belonged to Édouard Rahir (V, 1937, no. 1599). From the Richard Heber Library, bearing the stamp “Bibliotheca Heberiana” (II, 1834, no. 2373). Slightly yellowed paper. Hinges and the beginning of the raised bands restored; scuffing at the tail end.
