Rare original illustrated edition with 12 etchings, 6 heliogravures, 35 plates hors texte and numerous black-and-white drawings in the text - This artistic and literary work devoted to the representation of Algeria in the 19th century through the memories, observations, and studies of the French painter who dedicated a large part of his œuvre to this country - Consisting of texts accompanied by reproductions of works and scenes inspired by his numerous stays in North Africa, the book is at once an ethnographic testimony, a travel narrative, and an aesthetic reflection on the life, landscapes, and Algerian peoples - Gustave Guillaumet, an important figure of French Orientalist painting, stands out for a more attentive and realistic approach than that of many artists of his time, as he seeks less to depict an imaginary Orient than to reproduce the daily reality of the men, the women, the villages, and the spaces he observed - Gustave Guillaumet - Algerian Paintings - 1888 - E. Plon, Nourrit et Cie - 32 Pages. Good condition of the binding, work in its original green morocco half-leather with corners, marbled boards (board of cover preserved), light signs of wear, gilt top edges, spine with raised bands nicely decorated, title and author’s name gilded, gilt double rules on the boards - Good interior condition, browning, missing title page, original edition enriched with 12 etchings, 6 heliogravures, 35 plates hors texte and numerous black drawings in the text, marbled endpapers in good condition, a fine copy - Delivery service guaranteed within a few days -
