GREAT BRITAIN. Middlesex. Undated (1790s) End of Pain Halfpenny Token. D&H-831, W-8992. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-64 RB (PCGS). A highly attractive near-Gem Uncirculated example of this extremely popular token type. Both sides are toned in warm, original, olive-brown patina with soft powder blue undertones and, in the protected areas around the design elements, much bright mint orange color. Texture is hard and frosty, the strike nicely centered with razor sharp to full detail throughout. These English tokens are popular with collectors of American colonial era types due to the fact that Thomas Paine's writings helped to inspire the American Revolution. The English writer was born in 1737 and died in New York City in 1809, having emigrated to America in 1774 at the invitation of Benjamin Franklin. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 531747. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
