Gottfried Helnwein *1948 Vienna is an Austrian-Irish artist - internationally among the 100 most important contemporary artists. He became known especially for his hyperrealistic images of wounded and bandaged children. In his entire œuvre, he engages with the themes of pain, injury, and violence and also touches on taboo and provocative topics of recent history. Although Helnwein's works are rooted in the Austrian tradition, from the beginning elements of American popular culture flow into his images. Since 1977 Disney comic characters have appeared in his works. Helnwein repeatedly claims that he learned more from Donald Duck or through Carl Barks, one of the earliest and probably best known illustrators of this character, than in all the schools he attended. In 2000 the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art displayed the Helnwein painting of a monstrous, grinning Mickey Mouse (Mouse I) in the exhibition “The Darker Side of Playland – Childhood Imagery from the Logan Collection”.
