Alaska, the Last Frontier of gold Few names evoke the adventure of gold like Alaska. In 1880, the gold discovery at Gold Creek gave rise to the city of Juneau, today the state capital. Soon after, the gold rushes of Nome and Fairbanks drew thousands of prospectors willing to brave the extreme cold and a untamed nature in search of fortune. The Fairbanks district became the state's largest gold producer, and since 1968 gold has been Alaska’s official mineral.
