Futuristic jewellery defined the creative output of the 1960s and 1970s, with the “Space Age” serving as a key inspiration for the modernist designs of the time. Cool white gold and sparkling diamonds came together in abstract compositions. The delicate structures of spacecraft, the antennas of Sputnik, and the skeletal frameworks of new skyscrapers likely served as design muses. Unsurprisingly, in 1967, a brooch named “Cosmos” was awarded the prize for “Jewel of the Year.” The ring presented here is a striking example of jewellery from the era of the space race. This luxurious piece features a central natural Colombian emerald of wonderfully intense colour, which appears even more vibrant in contrast to the cool white gold. Instead of a traditional diamond surround, the high-quality gemstone is flanked at each corner by a diamond trapezoid. On either side, old brilliant-cut diamonds further enhance the design. The cuts of these diamonds, which date back to the late 19th century, are surprising for the ring’s period of creation. It is likely that they were repurposed from an heirloom piece, finding new brilliance in this modern design. In this way, both modernity and history come together to form a harmonious composition. The ring is accompanied by an independent certificate from DeGEB and is in excellent condition.
