Giuseppe Del Papa – Medical Consultations – Rome, Giovanni Maria Salvioni, 1733 Giuseppe Del Papa (1648–1735) Medical Consultations of Mr. Doctor Giuseppe Del Papa, Archiater of the Court of Tuscany, and public Lecturer in medicine at the University of Pisa. Dedicated to His Eminence Cardinal Troiano Acquaviva, Volume One Francesco Borghese, Volume Two Rome, at Giovanni Maria Salvioni, 1733. Description: Important and rare first edition of the Medical Consultations by Giuseppe Del Papa, famed Tuscan physician, archiater of the Court of Tuscany and public lecturer in medicine at the University of Pisa. The work constitutes a significant testimony of Italian medicine between the 17th and 18th centuries and collects a vast series of the author’s consultations and clinical observations, relating to different pathologies and physical conditions, through which the medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic conceptions of the era emerge. It also gathers numerous medical consultations, often presented in the form of detailed clinical cases, in which the physician examines the symptoms, the patient’s constitution, the evolution of the disease, and the remedies deemed appropriate according to the medical knowledge of the time. Giuseppe Del Papa (Empoli, 1648 – Florence, 1735) was one of the most authoritative figures in Tuscan medicine of his time. After teaching at the Pisa Studium, he became physician to the Medici court and archiater of the Court of Tuscany, succeeding some of the most important doctors of the Florentine circle. He was also a member of the Accademia della Crusca and of several literary and scientific academies. The collection of consults was published in Rome in 1733 thanks to the editorial activity of Giovanni Gaetano Bottari, who had personal and professional relations with Del Papa. The 1733 edition is considered the first publication of the collection; subsequent posthumous editions followed, such as the 1751 edition.
