Gugliano Ottaviani (note: actually Giuliano Ottaviani) was born in Foligno (Perugia). From a young age, his predisposition for applied arts with exuberant creativity and remarkable technical virtuosity was evident; for this reason he attended the Art School in Perugia and, under the critical eye of M° Domenico Purificato, earned a diploma from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. After debuting with a first solo exhibition in Milan at the age of 17, he shifted his focus to Switzerland and, in Zurich, the renowned gallerist Her Bolag wanted to buy some of his works for his private collection. Until 1976 Ottaviani divided his time between Italy and Switzerland, two nations that saw him grow, with more solo shows, his desire to fully realize himself in the artistic field, and nothing could deter his teaching activity in painting and sculpture, which he pursued for a brief time, dedicating his life to a constant and total commitment to the search for new ideas and forms. Many are the satisfactions that marked Giuliano Ottaviani’s path, a journey rich in success: in Paris, after being awarded the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters, 1st prize, the only Italian, he became the author of several frescoes in a renowned fashionable venue; the galleries of the French capital competed to exhibit his works in solo shows: Gallerie du Pack Royal, Gallerie Robin. In Italy he consistently exhibited his works along the Amalfi Coast: from Positano to Ravello, Amalfi hosted him in the Republic Arsenals, and on that occasion he contributed to illustrating the book ‘Masamoeòòp do Amalfi’ at the request of the same Municipality. He would be present for 8 years with solo exhibitions. In 1988 the city of Nantes invited his presence on the occasion of the bicentennial of the French Revolution, and a large exhibition was set up to commemorate the event, and the works of the ‘Masaniello of Amalfi’ were shown as a testimony of the Neapolitan revolt. His art thus made him a European citizen, exhibiting in Germany in Cologne, Nuremberg, and other German cities; annually there were 6-8 solo shows and, more than in private galleries, his works were shown in centers provided by various Municipalities and Provinces that were honored to host the artist, offering the public his vast creativity. Ottaviani’s work is not limited to painting and sculpture, but extends to jewelry, interior design, and urban furniture with the realization of monumental sculptures from 2 to 6 meters tall which, externally of high artistic craftsmanship and internally of great social use. Moreover, underground parking for cars and multi-level display stands for presenting a variety of articles: art, fashion, and folkloric specialties from every region. In the ’80s the Master Ottaviani founded a European group to which many artists of various nationalities joined, and he organized high-level international exhibitions. In France, the artist exhibited in several moments in multiple cities: Lyon hosted him in the municipal halls, Beaulieu sur Mer invited him to the Monumental Sculpture exhibition in multiple editions, and in Charlieu M° Ottaviani created, in the civic museum, a mural of 10 x 20 meters and held a summer sculpture course invited by the European university. The French Riviera also benefited from his work: Cannes, Antibes, Valauris, Biot, Le Luc, Saint-Jean, Cap d’Ail saw a succession of solo exhibitions, and the renowned Nice gallery ‘Quadrige’ permanently displayed his works. The artist’s works have been seen in almost all Italian cities: from the prestigious Rendano Theater in Cosenza, to the Taormina exhibition hall, from Palazzo Barberini in Rome, to La Loggia Gallery in Udine, from the Percorsi d’arte Gallery in Venice to the Muse Gallery in Bari, and many others of notable importance such as the Sanremo casino and for eight years in many towns along the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. Europe has now become a limited field for the prospects of M° Ottaviani and his activity reaches America. He is officially invited by New York University and hosted with a large solo exhibition. Followed by Los Angeles, Laguna Beach and many others. The largest and most prestigious nuclear center in the world, Fermilab in Chicago, invites him to publicly perform a grand canvas of 2 meters by 20 in a performance titled ‘Symbiosis in Concert’, his new idea: to pair music with painting. Two talented artists, a pianist and a violinist accompany Master Ottaviani performing a classical music concert. The Principality of Monaco hosts him repeatedly to perform his performances in Monte Carlo and the tour continues in Italy as well. Liguria is the Italian region that repeatedly invites Giuliano Ottaviani to its picturesque towns of Spotorno, Savona, Celle Ligure, Loano, Varazze and others. For his valuable contribution to the arts in 1991 the President of the Republic, Francesco Cossiga, awarded him the honor of Knight of the Republic of Italy. His vast oeuvre even extends into numismatics and philately: he creates, on commission, medals for Banks and Religious Institutes, and for the centenary of the birth of the poet Eugenio Montale he produced the postmark for the Italian State Printers. Since 1997 M° Ottaviani has dedicated his time and remarkable creativity to the social field: in Brazil, in São Paulo, he was offered the opportunity to teach sculpture to street kids, called pichadores, youths who, simply for being born poor, become misfits and commit crimes punishable by local law. The rehabilitation of these kids led various municipal administrations to value Ottaviani’s work by offering the opportunity to found the 1st Ottaviani Academy in Brazil. The same operation will be followed in the near future in other cities in Brazil and, likely, also in Italy. 1998 marked a very important turning point for Giuliano Ottaviani’s activity: winner of an international sculptors’ competition, he had the opportunity to create a 5-meter-high marble sculpture in China, specifically in Changchun, and the honor was to be the 1st Italian to have a sculpture permanently exhibited in a Chinese square. He then exhibited at the World Art Museum China Millennium Monument on the occasion of Italy-China Year 2006, where 13 large monumental works remain in the museum’s collection. The Chinese tour continued to Shanghai, where the city acquired numerous works for the public collection. After Shanghai, he moved again to Brazil for the Salvador city museum exhibition. His curriculum vitae is on file in archives in: Florence, Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence, Paris, Beaubourg, Centre Pompidou.
