GIBERT DE MONTREUIL. *Roman de la Violette, or Gérard de Nevers*, in verse, from the 13th century, published for the first time, based on two manuscripts from the Royal Library, by Francisque Michel. Paris, Silvestre, 1834. In-8, dark purple morocco, bordered with interlacing bands and gilded violets in the corners, coat of arms, decorated spine, purple morocco lining with wide lace and a central decoration of small ironwork, untrimmed, modern slipcase (Petit succ. de Simier). First edition. The manuscript on which this edition was based was produced on behalf of Philip of Burgundy; the volume reproduces 6 lithographic miniatures by Hipp. Jony, plus 2 pages from the manuscript—one of which features an illustrated initial—and a lithograph based on a miniature from a manuscript of Gérard de Nevers’s prose romance. Printed in an edition of 200 copies; this is one of 9 on China paper containing the illustrations in double proofs: on China paper, in black, and on vellum, illuminated in perfect imitation of the original miniatures. Rich binding lined by Petit, bearing the coat of arms of Duriez de Verninac. From the Tissot-Dupont Library (1970, no. 70). Minor marginal foxing.
