Gianni Berengo Gardin (1930–2025) – The Flame at Night (Untitled) Original photograph print by Gianni Berengo Gardin, one of the leading figures of Italian documentary photography in the 20th century. The black-and-white composition depicts a nighttime scene: a powerful vertical flame illuminates a group of people, including photographers and onlookers, while two male figures occupy the foreground. The strong contrast between light and darkness, the immediacy of the moment, and the arrangement of the characters confer the image with notable narrative intensity. The photograph recalls the language of social and cultural reportage that characterized Berengo Gardin’s work, an attentive observer of Italian society and its transformations. The place, the date of the shot, and the occasion depicted are not documented. The title The Flame at Night is descriptive; the work has been catalogued as Untitled.
