This drawing, entitled Iphigenia brought before Agamemnon (also internationally known as Iphigenia led to the Council of Agamemnon), is an work attributed to the celebrated Venetian artist Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Venice 1727-1804) (also known as Giandomenico Tiepolo) or to his workshop. Technique: Black pencil, brown pen and ink with brown wash (aquatint) on laid paper. Sheet size: 20 x 29 cm. On the reverse is written Marcola, probable attribution by a previous owner to the Italian painter Marco Marcola (1740-1793). Details of the work and style: The scene is drawn from Greek myth and precedes the famous tragedy of the young girl's sacrifice. It shows the moment when Iphigenia is led before her father Agamemnon, seated on a throne on the left under a monumental portico, surrounded by the leaders and counsellors of the Greek army. Technique: The work is executed with a classic late-Baroque and Venetian Rococo technique, using pen, brown ink and wash-filled tones on laid paper, a medium typical of sketches and preparatory studies of the Tiepolo workshop. Composition: The composition highlights the typical theatrical dynamism of the Tiepolos. On the left dominates the figure of royal authority (Agamemnon) surrounded by warriors with shields, while on the right the procession advances to escort the girl, set against a landscape background opened and suggested by a single tree.
