German school (XVIII) - Porträt eines Herren in rotem Rock

German school (XVIII) - Porträt eines Herren in rotem Rock

Decorative 18th-century gentleman portrait, executed in oil on canvas. Shown is a suitably dressed gentleman in a red coat with a light waistcoat and a white neckcloth. The powdered, side-curled wig as well as the clothing stylistically point to the middle to second half of the 18th century, probably around 1740–1770. The portrayal follows the representative portrait painting of this era: the depicted figure appears as a half-figure against a dark background, with the particularly vibrant red coat standing effectively against the ground. Facial features, wig and clothing details are finely worked, giving the portrait a strong decorative effect despite its clearly aged condition. The painting is oil on canvas and was earlier doubled. An artist attribution or signature is not known. Dimensions: Canvass approx. 60 × 50 cm Frame approx. 70 × 60.5 cm Provenance / connection to the Kayser family (painter Jean-Paul Kayser) The painting is accompanied by a handwritten statement by Friederike Kayser. In it she refers to the depicted person as an “ancestor of the Kayser family” and confirms that she gifted the picture in 1999 to the then owner. This declaration documents the painting’s former belonging to the Kayser family. An attribution of the painting to Paul Kayser is thus not connected. The handwritten provenance note is handed over together with the painting. Condition: The painting is in a decorative but restoration-needing or clearly aged condition. The canvas was doubled in the past. Throughout the surface there is pronounced, age-related craquelure. Additionally, older restoration and retouching traces are visible. Color losses and losses of material occur here and there, notably in the area of the right eye of the depicted person. Further minor abrasion and aging traces are present. The condition is therefore explicitly not good, but rather aged as expected and decorative. The included close-up details are part of the condition description and should be viewed carefully. The frame shows age-related signs of use. Note on taxation: The sale is taxed under the margin scheme according to § 25a UStG. Value-added tax is not shown separately. Note on AI visualizations: Possible room or presentation images shown were partially created with the help of artificial intelligence and are intended solely for illustration. The decisive aspects for motif, dimensions, colors, condition and execution are the original photos and the object description.
