Gerda Taro’s photographs of the Refugees from Málaga in Almería (February 1937) represent one of the most powerful and heartbreaking documentations of civilian suffering in the Spanish Civil War. Captured alongside her partner Robert Capa, this photo-story marked a pivotal moment where Taro emerged as a distinct, powerful voice in photojournalism. The Historical Context: "La Desbandá" In early February 1937, Nationalist forces led by General Francisco Franco captured the southern city of Málaga. Terrified of violent reprisals, an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 civilians fled the city on foot, embarking on a brutal 200-kilometer trek along the coastal highway toward the Republican-held haven of Almería. This exodus, known as La Desbandá (The Flight), became a massacre. As the defenseless refugees—mostly women, children, and the elderly—walked the narrow road wedged between the mountains and the sea, they were ruthlessly shelled by Nationalist navy ships and strafed from the air by German Luftwaffe planes. The survivors began arriving in Almería around February 10th and 11th, traumatized, starving, and completely destitute. Taro’s Visual Approach and Impact Taro and Capa arrived in Almería mid-month just as the coastal town became overwhelmed by the massive influx of displaced people. Rather than focusing solely on military maneuvers or political figures, Taro turned her camera directly toward the human cost of the conflict. • Humanizing the Invisible: Taro's photographs focused heavily on the exhaustion and profound grief of the refugees crowding the streets of Almería. She captured close-up, intimate frames of mothers holding their children, families sleeping on sidewalks, and eyes glazed over with shock. • The "Sympathy Image" Shift: Historians note that Taro was among the very first photojournalists to explicitly use images of suffering children to evoke international sympathy and protest against fascist warfare. One of her most famous frames from this series features a young child refugee resting, a neutral yet deeply evocative composition that art critics have compared to classical Western Christian paintings of innocence amid tragedy. • Stylistic Composition: Her square-format, gelatin silver prints (often just over 2x2 inches from her Rolleiflex camera) forced a tight, centered focus that brought the viewer face-to-face with the subjects. A Turning Point in Her Career The Almería coverage was a massive milestone for Taro's professional identity: • The Shared Byline: Right around this time in late February 1937, she and Capa began publishing their work under the joint byline "REPORTAGE CAPA & TARO," establishing her as an equal creative partner rather than an assistant. Their work on the refugees was quickly picked up by influential left-wing French publications like Regards. • Emergence as an Independent Journalist: Shortly after the Almería and southern front assignments, Taro signed her own contract with the daily French newspaper Ce Soir. She began taking solo trips to the front lines, fully stepping out from Capa’s shadow to become a fearless, independent war correspondent. Tragically, only five months after capturing the harrowing plight of the Málaga refugees, Taro was crushed by a tank during the Battle of Brunete in July 1937, becoming the first female photojournalist killed on the frontline. Her work in Almería remains preserved as a vital historical testament to the trauma of La Desbandá and stands as a masterclass in empathetic war photography. Became the first female photojournalist killed on the frontline, dying July 27, 1937, after injuries from a tank during the Battle... Lambda gelatine silver print by Galerie Bilderwelt
