His monumental work, Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, composed of 36 volumes published between 1749 and 1789, was the first attempt to collect all knowledge of the natural world into a single systematic work. It was an immense editorial success, read not only by scientists but by the entire European aristocracy.
