Born in Rouen in 1861, from a family of textile industrialists, he breaks with the family tradition and settles in Paris at a very young age where he begins working in the circle of Puvis de Chavannes and Raphaël Collin. He enrolled at the Beaux-Arts at 21, in Cormon’s studio. His own studio was first located in Paris, on Rue du Val-de-Grâce, then Rue Cardinet and, in 1908, Boulevard Gouvion-Saint-Cyr. His first engraving is a dry point from 1882. He travels through southern France, Brittany, and Venice, but the bulk of his inspiration lies in the landscapes of Île-de-France and Normandy. He became acquainted with Louis Barthou who became one of his collectors. Thus, during the period 1914 to 1918, Georges Le Meilleur became the “painter to the armies.” In 1937, he received the Grand Prize for original black-and-white engraving from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts of Paris with “La Poulinière.” Between the wars, he retired to Amfreville-la-Mivoie, where he finished his life, always marveling at the light and the trees of the banks of the Seine. Works by Georges Le Meilleur are notably represented at the Bibliothèque Nationale d’Art et d’Archéologie, the British Museum, the New York Municipal Library, the Louvre Chalcography, the Museums of Rouen, Vincennes, and Pittsburgh.
