George West, Texas. $10 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 635. First NB. Charter #12919. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20. Named for a cattle rancher by the name of George Washington West, the city named in his honor traces a history typically of many settlements across rural Texas. Settled in the 1910s on land donated by West, George West was close to the railroad in geographic terms and saw the organization of a National Bank in 1926 when the First National Bank (Charter# 12919) organized. This institution managed to keep a respectable circulation of $50,000 through at least 1934 before ultimately falling to liquidation which underscores why only a meager total of only 16 non-institutional survivors are recorded here by the National Bank Note Census and available to collectors as a result. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
