ILLUSTRATED EDITION ON NATURAL HISTORY, ZOOLOGY, ORNITHOLOGY, BOTANY, ANIMALS, BIRDS, GEOLOGY, NATURE by Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747-1822), a poet, playwright, translator, publisher, and naturalist. This is the volume III "Bilderbuch Für Kinder" (Picture-Book for Children), is richly illustrated with 96 copper engravings by the best German illustrators of the time. Beautiful hand coloured copper engravings of animals from all continents, birds, whales, flowers, fruits, butterflies, fish, reptiles, seals, fossils, amphibians, volcanic eruptions, insects, hurricanes, waterspouts, atmospheric events, caves, vessels, human races of all continents and their clothing. Each illustration is accompanied by a descriptive page in German and its scientific name in Latin. The importance of the *Bilderbuch für Kinder* extended far beyond its stated aim of offering a natural history work that was simultaneously instructive, pleasant, and entertaining; it was, to all intents and purposes, a product of the Enlightenment. Bertuch sought to recreate the magic of discovery, and thus he mingled engravings of plants, animals, shells, minerals, volcanoes, and technical inventions in a harmonious chaos, allowing the reader to rediscover the wonders of the natural world on every page. The book is complete and in very good condition, with the cover of the time, well printed, all the 94 illustrations have beautiful colours and are intact. COMPLETE EDITION, 96 COLOURED ILLUSTRATIONS. PLEASE NOTE; following the first edition, the work was published by various publishers in cities such as Vienna, Prague, and Paris. Because the series featured an extremely complex bibliographic structure—with loose plates intended for independent binding by purchasers—specific editions (such as this one from Prague) may differ slightly in the number and type of illustrations. For comparison, the same Volume 3—printed in Prague by the same publisher and containing 96 illustrations—is being sold here for 2,200 euros: https://www.abebooks.com/Bilderbuch-Nutzen-Vergn%C3%BCgen-Jugend-enthaltend-angenehme/21767541973/bd; the same Volume 3, and with 96 illustrations, is offered to you here at a fraction of that price. Another example, volume II printed in Prague by the same publisher and with 96 illustrations is being sold here for 1,600 euros here https://www.booklooker.de/B%C3%BCcher/F-riedrich-J-ustin-BERTUCH+Bilderbuch-zum-Nutzen-und-Vergn%C3%BCgen-der-Jugend-enthaltend-eine-angenehme/id/A02JyuQe01ZZi. AUTHOR: Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747-1822) was a poet, playwright, translator, publisher, and naturalist. He was a Freemason in the Amelia lodge in Weimar, a Knight of the German order, and one of the richest men in Germany, at one time employing approximately one-sixth of the population of Weimar. He had earlier published with Christoph Wieland the leading German literary periodical, Der teutsche Merkur, before founding his remarkable publishing concern, Verlag des Industrie-Comptoirs, which published the first German fashion periodical, Journal des Luxus und der Moden, the Bilderbuch, and other innovative series. The artwork for the Bilderbuch in general was overseen by Georg Melchior Kraus, together with J.H. Lips, and Bertuch engaged young artists at the Weimar Freies Zeichen-Institut, which he helped establish in 1776, as well as established artists such as C. Ermer, Th. Götz, C. Graf, C. Horny, Fr. Kaiser, and W. Waitz. The artists were able to consult libraries in Weimar and Jena as well as Bertuch's private library, and many living specimens, included those procured abroad, could be found in Bertuch's own extensive garden. COMPLETE EDITION, 94 COLOURED ILLUSTRATIONS. AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Georg Melchior Kraus (1737-1806) was a German painter. He was a co-founder of the Weimar Princely Free Drawing School, together with Friedrich Justin Bertuch, in 1776. In 1786, he and Bertuch began publishing the Journal des Luxus und der Moden, generally considered to be one of the world's first fashion magazines. Kraus provided the copper engravings, taken from drawings produced at the school. It was published until 1827. After 1790, they also created picture books for children.
