Provenance: The collection of the artist His posthumous sale, Christie's, Catalogue of the Remaining Works and the Collection of Ancient & Modern Pictures and Water-colour Drawings of the Late Right Honourable Lord Leighton of Stretton, 11 July 1896, lot 148, where purchased by Mrs Russell Barrington (1841-1933). Emilie Isabel Barrington (1841-1933) was a British biographer, artist, and novelist. Barrington formed a friendship with one of Frederic Leighton's sisters, and went on to write the first major biography of the artist: Life, Letters, and Works of Frederic Leighton (1906). After Leighton's death in 1896, Barrington was instrumental in establishing Leighton House as a museum and she acted as President of the Leighton House Society.
