English Description Franz Lehár – Handwritten postcard signed by singer Helene Holeczek (Vienna, 1936) to Franz Lehár, who added his own handwritten text and signature. Description: For sale is a fascinating contemporary musical document from 1936. It is a postcard addressed to the world-famous operetta composer Franz Lehár. Helene Holeczek, a teacher and singer whom he knew well, asks the "most esteemed master" to arrange for her niece to perform in an operetta. Lehár also includes a recommendation to a conductor to consider the postcard's bearer for an engagement. Written and dated (presumably) in Vienna, May 19, 1936. Ends with his characteristic signature. English Translation Most respected, dear Master! Couldn't you be so kind and put in a good word for Kunkel (my niece / Herma Noletzek) with Director Gruber / Gunthrone, so that she will be employed in the chorus for your operettas that are currently being performed at Rannacher's? Should the soprano part already be cast, she could also sing in the first act. The matter is very urgent. Please, please, be so kind and help. A thousand thanks in advance! Your indebted Helene Reich-Holeczek May 19, 1936. [In red pen by Franz Lehár:] May 19, 1936 Dear Kapellmeister Pailike! If there is any possibility, please consider the bearer of this card. Warmest regards Franz Lehár Historical & Biographical Context: This item originates from the notable correspondence between Franz Lehár and the well-known Viennese concert singer and vocal pedagogue Helene Holeczek (later Reich-Holeczek). Lehár maintained a close professional and personal relationship with her for decades, holding her talents in high esteem. Addational Context: Franz Lehár (1870 – 1948) was an Austro-Hungarian composer. He is mainly known for his operettas, of which the most successful and best known is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe). He is most famous for his operettas – the most successful of which is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) – but he also wrote sonatas, symphonic poems and marches. He also composed a number of waltzes (the most popular being Gold und Silber, composed for Princess Pauline von Metternich's "Gold and Silver" Ball, January 1902), some of which were drawn from his famous operettas. Individual songs from some of the operettas have become standards, notably "Vilja" from The Merry Widow and "You Are My Heart's Delight" ("Dein ist mein ganzes Herz") from The Land of Smiles (Das Land des Lächelns). His most ambitious work, Giuditta in 1934 is closer to opera than to operetta. It contains the ever popular "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß" ("My lips, they kiss so hot"). The connection between the singer Helene Holeczek and the composer Franz Lehár was primarily based on a professional acquaintance and mutual respect within the Viennese music scene of the early 1900s. There is a documented exchange between the two. Both were central figures in Viennese musical life. While Lehár revolutionized the world of operetta, Holeczek was active as a renowned concert and oratorio singer (frequently performing with the Vienna Symphony) and as a vocal pedagogue. The fact that a composer of Lehár's stature maintained personal contact with her underscores Holeczek's status as one of the leading "singing masters" of her time in Vienna. She taught numerous students who later performed on the major stages where Lehár’s works were staged. Provenance: Part of a complete, historical lot of the Lehár–Holeczek correspondence, originally acquired through a german auction house. Condition: An authentic, untouched collector's item with flawless provenance. #C237 We guarantee age and origi
