"On July 3, 1886, a event occurred that surely had a huge impact on human history. It was on that date that the first usable car in the world - this Karl Benz Patent-Motorcar - was first publicly demonstrated. No one at the time could know that the simple carriage, with speeds of 12 km/h, marked the beginning of a new era in human history - the automotive era. This first car had a four-stroke single-cylinder engine of 990cc. The engine was mounted horizontally on the vehicle, which in many ways was a unique combination of a horse carriage and a three-wheeled bicycle. With 0.9 hp the engine powered the spoke wheels and the innovative range of differential gears, belts and chains of Benz. This motorcar included innovations that are still used on more than 400 million cars. It had an electric ignition, a water-cooled engine and a very modern differential. The custom-made body included a seat for two passengers and a rack-and-pinion steering with a tiller control. The car had no foot brakes and was stopped by a hand brake on the drive mechanism. With an advanced differential drive, no reverse gear and a belt clutch, the vehicle could reach a maximum speed of 16 to 18 km/h. When this Benz appeared at the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, it captured the imagination of the public and marked the beginning of automotive history. The Benz Patent Motorwagen was more than just an invention in the pantheon of human technology. It was the first invention that opened the world and brought everyone and everything closer together."
