Frans Burman (gelatinized: Franciscus Burmannus; Leiden, 13 January 1628 - Utrecht, 12 November 1679), also called Burmannus I, was a Reformed preacher from the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. He became professor at Utrecht University in 1662 and served there as rector magnificus in the periods 1664-1665 and 1670-1671. Frans Burman was a son of Pieter Burman (1577-1630) and Josina Balde (1601-1667). His father was a merchant and pastor from Cologne, who from his first marriage, with Anna Maria Bruchhausen in 1604, had three children (Hester, Janneken, Petrus and Susanna). He later married the merchant’s daughter Josina Balde and had with her a son, Frans, and a daughter, Machteld. In his childhood the young Burman was instructed by Festus Hommius. He studied theology at Leiden University from 1643 and there made the acquaintance of Christophorus Wittichius and René Descartes. Burman spoke with Descartes about his ideas on 16 April 1648 at Egmond. The results of this conversation were described in Responsiones Renati Des Cartes ad quasdam difficultates ex meditationibus ejus, etc. ab ipso haustae. Burman preached from May 1650 to 10 June 1661 in Hanau. On 10 June 1661 he was appointed subregent of the States College to replace Martin Ubbenius. On 23 October 1661 he was promoted to Doctor in Leiden. On 6 October 1662 Burman was appointed ordinary professor of theology at Utrecht University and on 12 November of that year he delivered his inaugural oration, entitled Oratio de doctrina Christiana. His appointment was the result of a long dispute between Gisbert Voetius and Johannes Coccejus over the doctrine of the covenant and the Sabbath. Burman, like the then-members of the Utrecht vroedschap, was a follower of Coccejus. In his controversial work De moralitate sabbati hebdomadalis (1665) Burman argued that the Sabbath fulfilled only a ceremonial function, and he was the first to preach this message. His statements led to conflict with, among others, his colleague professor Andreas Essenius and the preacher Jodocus van Lodenstein. The vroedschap decided in 1669 that Utrecht professors may not use sharp or insulting words. From 6 March 1671 until his death on 12 November 1679 he worked as professor of Ecclesiastical History. On 17 March 1665 Burman married Maria Heidanus, a daughter of professor Abraham Heidanus (1597-1678). He had a daughter and four sons, including Petrus Burmannus Senior and Frans Burman, who was a preacher at Koudum, Brielle, Enkhuizen and Amsterdam in the Amstelkerk and Noorderkerk. He was an uncle of Pieter Burman Junior.
