The obverse shows the portrait of Napoleon III with a laurel wreath, surrounded by the inscription ‘NAPOLEON III EMPEROR’. The reverse shows the crowned imperial shield on a mantle, with the denomination 5 F, the year and the inscription ‘EMPIRE FRANÇAIS’. The design is by Désiré-Albert Barre.
