Buffalo Bill's Far West – French Tour of 1905 Buffalo Bill's Far West was a famous traveling show created by William F. Cody, known as “Buffalo Bill,” which toured extensively in the United States and Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The show blended elements of rodeo, theatrical reenactments, and displays of frontier skills, aiming to present a romanticized version of the American West. The 1905 French Tour In 1905, Buffalo Bill's Far West visited France as part of its European tour. The illustrated program you see here, priced at 50 centimes, was probably a souvenir sold to attendees. The work shows Buffalo Bill on horseback, hat in hand as a greeting, with the French tricolor and the United States flag behind him — symbolizing friendship between the two nations. Cultural importance The show was not merely entertainment, but also a form of cultural diplomacy, introducing European audiences to a stylized vision of the American frontier. It featured sharpshooting displays, reenactments of historical events, and performances by cowboys, Native Americans, and other “frontier figures.”
