Beautiful and rare example of religious trench art from World War I (1914-1918). This object is handcrafted by a soldier or civilian at the front. In contrast to the common thin copper casings, this altar is made from a heavy, thick-walled steel or iron artillery shell. A tight niche is cut from the front to form a 'cave.' Inside there is a refined, original statue of the Holy Virgin Mary (Our Lady) in her iconic blue-and-white attire, depicted in a praying pose. At the top the original time fuze with the numbered time ring is still fully intact and beautifully visible. A very robust and meaningful object that symbolizes the quest for spiritual protection and comfort during the horrors of the Great War.
