A Superb $10 Rainbow Rife with Uncommon Qualities and Eye Appeal Fr. 96. 1869 $10 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Banknote Gem Uncirculated 66 PPQ. Representative of a design type that would linger through the early 1900s before being discarded with the Series of 1901. This note represents the first iteration of this long-lived design that was issued under the Series of 1869 which is arguably best known for its distinctive coloration. The $10 issued under this series date was the highest denomination to feature green underprinting along the top margin and offers a nice contrast against its fellow design elements. From the blue coloration and silk fibers endemic to the security paper provided by the Wilcox Company and the almost burgundy-like shade of red endemic to the Treasury overprint, each element works to complement one another while offering a level of contrast frequently lost upon subsequent issues of Legal Tender Notes. A stern forward-facing portrait of American statesman and orator Daniel Webster can be seen at left opposite a vignette entitled Introduction of the Old World to the New or Pocahontas Presented at Court at right. The rich detail of the aforementioned vignette is particularly pleasant to both observe and comprehend. Details from individual articles of clothing can be observed while lifelike detail is demonstrated by each subject from Pocahontas to the men along the right margin wearing garb consistent with various ethnicities of the "Old World." By a similarly striking measure an array of exceedingly complex geometric lathework frames the Legal Tender obligation and anti-counterfeiting clause at center which together offers one of the most intricate designs of the period even when held against higher denominations such as the $50 and $100. Bound together, these traits are an aesthetic force to be reckoned with and one sure to enthrall even the most discerning of collectors with ease on account of this note's remarkable and decidedly exceptional technical qualities. PCGS Banknote Pop 6/None Finer. Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
