Fr. 64. 1869 $5 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58. Part of a long-lived design lineage that would linger through the late 1920s, this note represents the earliest issue in that lineage on account of the series imprint that accompanies the centermost vignette engraved by Henry Gulger dubbed The Pioneer Family better known simply as the "Woodchopper" in most numismatic texts. This vignette would be used on successive series dates, but its appearance on the Series of 1869 accompanies a distinctive array of colors that would be used only for that series imprint. The green underprinting is particularly bold and offers a nice contrast against both the Treasury overprint and engraved elements of the design. Held together with other elements such as the engraved reproduction of Treasurer Francis E. Spinner's distinctive vanity signature and the multitude of counters and cartouches that accompany Gulger's iconic vignette, it takes little to figure that this example is a particularly attractive "58" even among like-graded peers and should effortlessly bring a final realization befitting both our description and the distinctiveness of the design. Estimate: $2,500 - $3,500. Click here for certification details from PMG.
