Fr. 64. 1869 $5 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Choice About New 58 PPQ. Bearing only a hint of circulation and nothing more. One could rightfully confuse this specimen for one that would reside in a Choice Uncirculated holder owing to the eye appeal and color endemic to this particular specimen that represents the first iteration of a design that would be issued through the late 1920s. Seen at center is a vignette known simply as The Pioneer Family while a portrait of President Andrew Jackson adapted from Thomas Sully's portrait can be seen at left and helps underpins the aesthetic lineage that subsequent iterations of this design can trace back to the Series of 1869. Yet this piece offers something distinctive compared to its descendants that doesn't relate to the back design. Along the top margin green underprinting offers a remarkable contrast against the appeal of the paper body and the engraved and overprinted elements of the design while a multitude of silk fibers typical of security paper furnished by the Wilcox Company serve to demonstrate what was once the forefront of anti-counterfeiting measures. No doubt a fine specimen by even the most objective of measures, it should stand to reason that this piece will be treasured by whomever places the winning bid. Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000.
