Gorgeous Gem Uncirculated "First Obligation" $5 Legal Tender Note Fr. 61a. 1862 $5 Legal Tender Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. A gorgeous note in every conceivable aspect. This $5 Legal Tender Note is nonetheless more than another technical and aesthetic marvel thanks to fortunate circumstance, but alas a testament to a design where Gem Uncirculated examples are seldom traded despite a sizable number traceable to a number of period accumulations. Here every element of the design is captured in crisp detail that seemingly reflects the day this note was printed during the 1860s. From the engraved rendition of Thomas Crawford's sculpted masterwork Freedom which sits atop the dome of the United States Capitol Building in Washington (seen at left) to the underprinted "Canada Green" protector seen at center, it takes little to reason that every element offers a superb impression that will effortlessly capture the condition-minded psyche of the average numismatist. Held together with the back design, the condition of this specimen is further magnified. Representative of the so-called "First Obligation" which explicitly states the convertibility of this note into 5-20 6% bonds, this note represents an improbable survivor as these notes were culled from circulation in disproportionate quantities as Congressional action prompted a deadline for their redemption in 1863. Yet a handful of high-grade "First Obligation" $5s survived on this Friedberg Number making this not only an accessible example of a note that would otherwise be unobtainable at this grade level, but one that should effortlessly command the attention of bidders. Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
