A Trophy Among Small Size Replacements An Elusive Prospect for Collectors Fr. 2404*. 1928 $50 Gold Certificate Star Note. PCGS Banknote Uncirculated 62. A rare sight even as a non-Replacement at this grade level, it takes little to reason that bidders have here for their consideration a truly remarkable item. Issued under the Series of 1928 and emblazoned with no less eight counters emblazoned "50," these elements already echo a familiar form, but the presence of a yellow-gold Treasury overprint betrays this note as something that somehow survived the nigh-dictatorial provisions of Executive Order 6102 which culled millions of similar Gold Certificates from commercial channels. Today $10s and $20s account for the bulk of known survivors while $50s, $100s, and anything higher are only encountered infrequently at best. Per Track & Price at least 1,500 $50 Gold Certificates issued under the Series of 1928 are known to collectors while Replacements account for a tiny fraction of that population in relative terms with less than 50 overall recorded survivors. Those survivors are nonetheless largely clustered towards the middle of the grading spectrum while a few outliers that avoided technical circulation are recorded among the extant notes. One such example graded Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ by the likes of PMG and pedigreed to the Manhattan Beach Collection realized a staggering $84,000.00 in our Spring 2026 Showcase Auction (Lot 7056) exceeding its presale estimate while a mid-grade example sold more recently in our Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Lot 23102) for $5,856. Held against those examples, bidders are presented here with a strictly Uncirculated example that shows signs of handling consistent with the grade assigned, but overall, it offers a level of eye appeal and technical sophistication bound to be appreciated by the discerning specialist. From the vivid golden hues of the Treasury overprint to rich detail brought to form by Grant's portrait and the view of the United States Capitol Building looking towards Foggy Bottom, bidders have here a veritable trophy for their consideration which may very well make our initial estimate seem rather conservative in retrospect. Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
