Fr. 1500. 1928 $1 Legal Tender Note. PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ. Representative of both a type and series imprint that was largely released in Puerto Rico during the late 1940s. This particular example nonetheless led a life atypical of its surviving peers even among those that were released in Puerto Rico. Yet one may also observe why Puerto Rico was the ideal location to release these notes after a small quantity had been distributed through the Treasury Cash Room in Washington in the early 1930s. Elements such as the crimson-red Treasury overprint and the Woods - Woodin signature cut a collective impression that offers a distinct contrast against the $1 Silver Certificates of the 1930s and 1940s and how the relative geographic isolation of Puerto Rico would conceivably tamp down on the inevitable questions and claims of "counterfeit" that would undoubtedly follow as a result of a hypothetical release on the mainland. That said, bidders do have a sizable population of high-grade survivors to consider for themselves thanks to a few scattered runs, but examples on par with this one are quite rare when held against surviving Choice and Gem Uncirculated examples making this something of an opportunity to be had by the quality-minded specialist. Noted for "Exceptional Paper Quality, Great Embossing" by PMG. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
