Fr. 1214. 1882 $100 Gold Certificate. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20. The Series of 1882 proved long-lived on the $100 denomination which was never redesigned like the $20 and $50 in 1905 and 1913. This particular specimen features the Teehee - Burke signature combination current from 1915 to 1919 and shows evidence of even circulation that lends this specimen a strong degree of eye appeal. The orange-gold coloration on the back that was prone to fading is particularly bright and helps distinguish this specimen in terms of eye appeal while the balance of the design does well to showcase a design that was arguably more at home in an aesthetic sense in the 1880s as opposed to the 1910s. The portrait of Thomas Hart Benton who held strong views on the issue of "hard money" may be seen at left along the margin and accounts for one of the more obscure personalities depicted on period Gold Certificates along with his contemporary Silas Wright seen on the $50 issued through 1913. PCGS Banknote comments "Minor Repairs." Estimate: $1,250 - $1,750. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
