[FOURNIER (Father Georges)]. *Asiae nova descriptio, in qua praeter provinciarum situs, et populorum mores...* Paris, Sébastien and Gabriel Cramoisy, 1656. Folio, fawn sheepskin, elaborate gilt decoration forming a double frame adorned with scrolls, double fillets, and various fleurons; coat of arms in the center; decorated spine; gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this description of Asia by Father Fournier, of the Society of Jesus, born in Caen in 1595 and died in La Flèche in 1652. (De Backer-Sommervogel, vol. III, col. 911.) A beautiful and richly decorated binding bearing the coat of arms of Jacques Charron (1599–1669), governor of Blois and father of Jean-Jacques Charron de Ménars (1643–1718), the bibliophile who purchased the entire collection of printed works from the De Thou library. The handwritten ex-praemio, which has been preserved, appears at the beginning of the volume: it is dated 1663 and signed by the rector of the Jesuit College of Blois. Engraved ex-libris bearing a coat of arms: Bibliothèque de La Hamonais. Extensive water stain affecting the entire volume. Scratches on the back cover, a few minor wormholes, a roughly restored corner, and a small tear at the top edge.
