Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 60 × 46 cm. Dimensions with frame: 80 × 66 cm. This religious and devotional work depicts Mary Magdalene in a penitent pose, following the iconographic models developed by Titian during the Venetian Renaissance. The saint is portrayed half-length, her gaze raised to heaven, her lips slightly parted, and an expression of profound repentance and spiritual fervor. Her long brown hair, arranged in abundant wavy strands, falls over her shoulders and chest, while her crossed arms and hands resting on her torso reinforce the introspective and emotional nature of the composition. A tunic in shades of gray and blue, delicately folded and partially draped over her shoulders, reveals part of her anatomy, establishing a contrast between physical beauty and the feeling of religious penance. The figure stands out against a predominantly dark background, in which, towards the upper left, a fragment of landscape or architectural structure is discernible, introducing a sense of spatial depth. The lighting, concentrated especially on the face, neck, shoulders, and hands, gently models the volumes through delicate tonal transitions, while the deep shadows accentuate the dramatic intensity of the scene. The composition reflects the Venetian pictorial tradition of the 16th and 17th centuries, characterized by the prominence of color, the sensuality of the anatomical treatment, and the emotional expression of the sacred figures. The work bears a close iconographic relationship to the various versions of the Penitent Magdalene painted by Titian, particularly in the arrangement of the arms crossed over the chest, the upward gaze, the abundant hair, and the combination of spirituality and feminine beauty. This model achieved extraordinary dissemination in subsequent European painting, being reinterpreted by numerous artists and workshops linked to the Venetian tradition. Stylistic affinities can also be drawn with certain compositions by Palma the Younger (Venice, 1548/1550-1628), due to the religious expressiveness and the treatment of drapery, as well as with some works by Bernardo Strozzi (Genoa, 1581 – Venice, 1644), due to the emotional intensity of the faces, the luminous modeling of the flesh tones, and the contrasts between light and shadow. These references constitute stylistic and iconographic parallels and do not imply a direct attribution to these artists. The painting exemplifies the persistence of Titianesque models during the 17th century, when the representation of Mary Magdalene acquired particular significance within Counter-Reformation spirituality, symbolizing repentance, conversion, and redemption through faith. It is presented in a gilded frame of historicist character, decorated with floral motifs in relief, stylized leaves and ornamental elements in the corners, which enhance the devotional character and the visual presence of the whole.
