The Alchemist / The Sorcerer Austrian School (18th–19th Century) – (After Martin Johann Schmidt, called Kremser Schmidt) Lot Description Fascinating oil on panel painting depicting an 18th-century alchemical scene. This is a refined period copy based on the work of Martin Johann Schmidt (1718–1801), the famous Austrian painter known as Kremser Schmidt, one of the most prominent masters of the Late Baroque and Rococo periods in Central Europe. The composition depicts a figure standing over a glowing hearth, dropping a scorpion into a flaming crucible while holding metal tongs. The scene is rich in allegorical and esoteric details typical of the genre: A human skull with a femur and an open book of herbal remedies/grimoire in the foreground. A dried lizard/salamandra suspended from the ceiling above the hearth. A dramatic chiaroscuro effect generated by the glowing embers lighting up the scene. An informational label attached to the reverse of the panel references the well-known engraving of this subject made by the Austrian printmaker Ferdinand Landerer (1730–1795). (vedi foto) Presentata in un'elegante cornice sagomata in legno scuro. Descrizione: Affascinante dipinto a olio su tavola raffigurante una scena di genere alchemico-esoterica. Si tratta di una refined copia d'epoca realizzata dall'opera di Martin Johann Schmidt (1718–1801), celebre pittore austriaco noto come Kremser Schmidt, tra i massimi esponenti del tardo barocco e rococò nell'Europa centrale. La composizione mostra una figura maschile intenta a compiere un rituale o un esperimento alchemico sul focolare, calando uno scorpione in un crogiolo incandescente. Il dipinto è ricco di dettagli iconografici e allegorici tipici del genere: Un teschio umano con femore e un erbario/grimorio aperto in primo piano. Un rettile/salamandra essiccato sospeso sopra il focolare. Un forte contrasto di luce (chiaroscuro) generato dalle fiamme del braciere che illuminano la scena. Sul retro della tavola è presente un cartiglio informativo che rimanda alla celebre incisione tratta da questo soggetto, eseguita dall'incisore austriaco Ferdinand Landerer (1730–1795).
