Folding screen with cherry blossoms - Silk

A superb tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen), featuring a painting of a spring garden against a silver leaf ground that has developed a beautifully oxidized aged patina. The composition is dominated by the sweeping trunk of a mature cherry tree 桜 (sakura), its gracefully arching branches laden with delicate pink blossoms extending across the upper register of the screen. Scattered petals drift gently through the air, while a pair of Japanese tits 四十雀 (shijûkara) flutters amongst the flowering branches. Below, an abundant garden unfolds with a rich variety of seasonal flowers. A large pink blooming peony 牡丹 (botan) forms the focal point of the planting, accompanied by white camellias 椿 (tsubaki), chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), tiger lilies 鬼百合 (oniyuri), irises 菖蒲 (ayame) beside a rocky waterside, and numerous smaller flowering plants. Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper with a silver leaf ground. The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims, consisting of a narrow dark golden inner band and a broad golden outer band. The screen is set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware. Period: Japan – circa 1900, Meiji period (1868–1912). Dimensions: Total width: 373 cm (2 × 63.5 cm, 4 × 61.5 cm); Height: 171.6 cm. The screen is in very good condition considering its age, with only minimal wear consistent with age on both sides, including restoration upper right hinge. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall as a decorative work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
