Rare Latin edition of a fundamental treatise on military art in Ancient Rome. Known under the title De re militari, or Epitoma rei militaris, this work sets forth the principles that the author considers indispensable for the organization, instruction and effectiveness of armies - Written in late antiquity, probably at the end of the 4th or beginning of the 5th century, the treatise relies on Roman military traditions and on the idea that the power of an army depends as much on discipline, preparation and quality of its command as on the number of soldiers engaged - Vegetius insists in particular on the recruitment of men, the selection of new recruits, their physical and technical training as well as the learning of the movements necessary for combat - Flavius Vegetius Renatus - Flavi Vegetii De Re Militari - 1670 - Andreae ab Hoogenhuysen - 23 pp + 510 pages - Fair condition of the binding, book in its full dark brown leather from the period, signs of wear, a few minor defects on the cover, backstrip and headpieces missing, joints split, corners worn, edges speckled red - Good interior condition, browning, wormholes at the beginning, nice frontispiece, a few engravings/diagrams in text, a fine foldout plan of a Roman camp, a good copy - Delivery service available within a few days -
