The advanced review copy of a smart biography on the famous pre-Raphaelite known for his rebellion and complex poetry. The advanced review copy of The Life of Algernon Charles Swinburne, a charming literary biography on the celebrated pre-Raphaelite, written by esteemed literary critic Edmund Gosse. Publisher's review insert stapled to top edge of title leaf, with presentation copy stamp to title leaf. In the publisher's original green cloth. Contains a frontispiece, five illustrated plates, and a facsimile. Collated complete. Among the most influential poets of his era, Swinburne was known for both his complex double rhymes and his rebellion against tradition, with the latter being the primary reason he was rejected by Queen Victoria to be Tennyson's successor as Poet Laureate. Gosse was among the most famous literary critics of his generation, applauded for his charm and holding a weekly column in the Sunday Times. In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with the odd faint handling mark. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Fading to the spine. Minor offsetting to free end papers. Head of front end paper hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Review copy insert and presentation copy stamp to title leaf. Pages are mostly bright and clean, with offsetting to leaves and plates due to tissue guards, including the title leaf and frontispiece. Very Good
