[First Edition] The Green Years A. J. Cronin [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]

[First Edition] The Green Years A. J. Cronin [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]

Publication: London, Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1945 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 238. Condition Report: Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket. The dark green cloth binding remains exceptionally sharp and tight, with unbumped corners and firm spine ends; the gilt lettering to the spine is wonderfully bright and entirely unoxidised. The text block is square and structurally sound, with the typical mild age-toning to the page edges expected of post-war paper stock, though the interior pages remain clean, unmarked, and free of foxing. The original, unclipped dust jacket (retaining the 9/6 NET printed price) presents very well, exhibiting some light shelf-wear, faint toning to the spine panel, and a few minor nicks to the extremities, but no significant loss or tears, and is now preserved in a removable archival sleeve. Catalogue Note: First UK Edition, first impression. A. J. Cronin's The Green Years was originally published in the United States by Little, Brown and Company in 1944; this 1945 Victor Gollancz production represents the true first British edition. It is bound in the publisher's original dark green cloth and housed in the distinctive typographical dust jacket, printed by The Fanfare Press. Given the immense popularity of Croninâs works during the mid-twentieth century, this title was printed in substantial numbers, making it relatively common on the secondary market. However, finding copies that retain their original dust jackets in such well-preserved condition, without major loss or significant fading, has become increasingly difficult for collectors of modern first editions. Set in a vividly realised Scottish town, The Green Years is a moving coming-of-age story that follows young Robert Shannon, an orphaned Catholic boy forced to live with his staunchly Protestant, penny-pinching relatives. Amidst the struggles of religious prejudice, poverty, and his own budding academic ambitions, Robert finds a surprising ally and mentor in his roguish, larger-than-life great-grandfather. A deeply introspective and emotionally resonant novel, A. J. Cronin's masterful storytelling explores the trials of youth, the search for identity, and the enduring power of familial love and resilience against the backdrop of an unforgiving community.
